Hacktoberfest 2020
A virtual hackathon for Hacktoberfest 2020.
It's that time of year again! Hacktoberfest 2020 is fast approaching, and myself and Lorna Mitchell are planning a virtual hackathon.
When: 12th October 2020 6pm BST/CET - late.
Where: The #open-source channel in the Write the Docs Slack
If you want your contributions to be tracked (and rewarded with a t-shirt by Digital Ocean), sign up.
What is Hacktoberfest?
Hacktoberfest is an event run by Digital Ocean, designed to encourage participation in open source software.
From Digital Ocean's FAQ:
Hacktoberfest is a monthlong celebration of open source software run by DigitalOcean. Hacktoberfest is open to everyone in our global community! Four quality pull requests must be submitted to public GitHub repositories. You can sign up anytime between October 1 and October 31.
About the virtual hackathon
A hackathon is a period of intensive work on software, documentation, and related projects.
We're running a virtual event in the Write the Docs Slack, on Monday 12th October. We'll be available to answer questions and offer support, especially if you're new to open source, git, and GitHub. Come join us and chat about what you're working on!
Contributing to open source and using GitHub
If you need more info about contributing to open source, Lorna is giving a talk on 6th October: Level up as an open source contributor.
To get credit for Hacktoberfest participation, you need to contribute via GitHub. This means using git, a version control tool. If you are new to git, check out GitHub's documentation, or (for a deep dive), Learn Git in a Month of Lunches.
